[Parenting] Newborn Sleep Tips Every New Mom Should Know
"Getting your newborn to sleep can feel like a mystery—but don’t worry, every new mom has been there! These gentle and practical tips will help you (and your baby!) get more of the rest you both need."
1. Learn your baby’s sleep cues
Newborns can’t tell you they’re tired—but they do show it. If your baby rubs their eyes, yawns, looks away, or becomes fussy, these are signs it’s time to sleep. Try to respond early to these cues before your baby becomes overtired.
2. Follow a flexible routine, not a strict schedule
Newborns don’t follow a strict schedule—and that’s perfectly okay. Instead of focusing on the clock, observe your baby’s cues. A consistent but flexible bedtime routine—like a warm bath, a soft lullaby, and dim lights—can help your baby connect those activities with sleep.
3. Create a calm sleep environment
Newborns sleep best in a quiet, dim, and cool environment. A white noise machine can help mimic the sounds they heard in the womb, and blackout curtains can make daytime naps easier.
4. Practice safe sleep habits
Always place your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm and flat mattress—without pillows, toys, or loose blankets. This greatly reduces the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and helps ensure a safe sleep environment
5. Don’t stress over sleeping through the night
It’s normal for newborns to wake every 2–3 hours for feeding. Their tummies are tiny! As they grow, they’ll gradually sleep for longer stretches. Give yourself grace—this stage is temporary.
